Dear Linda,Lance and families.
This day won't be easy but you are strong and your family will be with you.
I would sneak through your backyard and your Dad would call out with his big smile and gesture for me to go upstairs to your Mum's kitchen and I would feel warmth, always laughter and of course, as Todd mentioned, the smells of the famous chicken soup. Even though I probably led you astray your Mum always made me feel grounded and most welcome. Ella was such a beautiful human being.
We can't be there with you today but sending our love. Donna, Joe Toby and Lily. Xxxx

To my beautiful Nana

You gave me love when times were tough, you gave me chicken rice soup when I was sick, you gave me vino and lemonade and let me play cards with the Italian ladies, so I could feel grown up as a little kid. You spoiled me with extra biscuits, you comforted me when I was hurt with magical hugs. You made me laugh every day, even when it was Mum just telling me a story about something you had said. There are friends of mine who hadn’t seen you in decades that still laugh about their visits to your kitchen table when we were teenagers, like when you called me a “mook” for refusing food for the 13th time in 10 minutes, so they learned, if Nana offered you food, you said yes. No other answer was accepted.

Once there was some Italian opera on TV, I asked “what are they singing about Nana”, you said with a straight face “I have no idea”.

You created our family and showed us how love, happiness and loyalty can overcome any hardship. You were generous to everyone. Importantly, you reminded me of promises I had made to you, so that I would keep working towards my goals because you believed in me.

You came to a strange land as a little girl, escaping tyranny, where you were then beaten by teachers but eventually found happiness. It was here that you found the love of your life and built a future together, for which we are all grateful.

On my last day in Ballina, 6 years ago, I got to spend most of it by your side. We laughed, we cried, we said goodbye, because we were not sure what the future held. I will always cherish those last moments with you.

Forever in my heart. Never forgotten.

Your loving grandson

Todd
